Monumento de Santiago

On our way to Cabarete we will make a quick stop in the iconinc "Monumento de Santiago" also known as "El Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración"

The monument was originally built during Rafael Leónidas Trujillo's dictatorship in 1944 as the Monument to Peace of Trujillo. In honor of himself, he ordered its construction. The monument was built in honor of the Dominican War of Independence, fought in 1844 to gain sovereignty from Haiti.

In 1961, after Trujillo's assassination, the monument was renamed "Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration." This monument honors those who fought in the Dominican Restoration War, an 1863-1865 conflict between Dominican Loyalists and Spanish forces. Among the heroes are Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Gregorio Luperón.
